![]() One look at today’s photo should reveal everything you need to know. Yup. I’m empty. Readers know this sometimes happens. I get caught between blog cycles, something I’m working on doesn’t really pan out or isn’t ready to go, or the day gets by me and it’s 7 p.m. and I’m staring at a blank screen. Today’s case was a little of all that. Because I consider you the boss, let me explain how we got here today.
First, a little about the blog process. Basically, there isn’t one. I go into each week with a general idea of what’s coming, but all that could change in a moment’s notice. I’ve messed quite a bit with my own personal deadline. I’m OK with writing first thing in the morning or late afternoon. But upon awakening, I should have an idea what I’m writing that day. I thought Wednesday would be a breeze. See, I had a full schedule of appointments, including two Cattle Dog chats, that would keep me busy from 8 to 5. No problem, I figured, because I had a blog on the sidelines just waiting to go. The blog was two weeks old. I pulled it at the time because Milton was on its way. When I grabbed the blog Wednesday morning to make sure it was still fresh, I realized it wasn’t. I then had to make the call — update the blog or shelve it for the moment. I decided to shelve it, which makes sense for the blog but also leaves me having to write late, which I would prefer to avoid. That said, here are some blog topics you can expect to see in the coming days:
And other exciting snippets. The real problem with writing late is I just don’t trust myself. I’m tired, it’s been a full day; my head has a lot going on, and striking a pose on a political angle just isn’t very smart. I generally want the blog in bed by 10 p.m. Meaning, it’s written, edited, re-edited, re-written if necessary, posted with links, and scheduled for Facebook. I often will post earlier, but then edit in or out words/phrases while the blog is live. By 10, though, I’d like the workday done. Well, sometimes it doesn’t work that way. I’ve been in situations where I’m still writing past midnight. Unless that’s planned — Primary Election night for example — someone (me) isn’t having a good day. No way should I be writing that late. That’s how mistakes happen. So, while I’m not thrilled that a Thursday blog is, well, void of substance, I’d rather have that than have me go off half-cocked because it’s late and I’m cranky. I have twice totally rewritten blogs after they were posted because someone contacted me the same night to complain. In both cases, the person was absolutely right. The blog was vindictive and cynical when it wasn’t necessary. Both blogs required a rewrite into the wee night. I’d rather avoid that. Best to throw the ball away sometimes than risk an interception. I’m fairly confident this won’t happen again for a while. I already have blogs lined up through next week. There you have it. A blog about nothing. Enjoy this beautiful day, friends.
