There’s an adage in the news biz about assumptions. We never write about an event taking place until it actually does. I used to edit a small weekly newspaper back in Michigan. One of the local writers couldn’t attend a group’s monthly meeting because it was after the deadline, so she’d write it AS IF she had been there. Happy Thursday! We’re going to have a little fun today at the expense of big corporations. About a week ago, I noticed two things while driving through Inverness: Aldi’s replacing the Winn-Dixie sign at the store on S.R. 44, and a sign announcing another quick oil-change place next to the ABC liquor store. Well, that’s two significant business additions to my hometown, so I made a note to mention it. I did that Thursday, posting an innocent photo of the Valvoline Instant Oil Change sign on the vacant corner lot at C.R. 581. It’s Wednesday, so let’s talk about our favorite menace. First, we’re going to jump right in and elevate Justin Stickland to hero status. Justin is chairman of the Library Advisory Board. He’s also a close friend, the one I refer to as Pastor Justin, a man who has saved my spiritual sanity time and again. Happy Tuesday, Citrus County. I was headed to Spring Hill on Monday morning when a friend called to say that Charlie Dean had died. It wasn’t totally unexpected. Charlie was 86 and in failing health. Still. It’s Charlie Dean. One of those “larger than life” people who graced our community with his leadership as Sheriff and then in the Legislature. Happy Monday! Here’s a name from the wayback machine: Hal Flowers. I thought of Hal on Sunday as I snapped my spectacular Three Sisters Springs photo for today’s blog. Truth be told, I was never a fan of Deb’s car. She bought it in March 2024. Deb loved it, I didn’t. The car just didn’t do anything for me. Another black Kia Soul in a sea of black Kia Souls. It now doesn’t leave my side. And, as of last Friday, it’s mine. Here it is, 5 p.m., and a blank screen. Numerous reasons for that. They all boil down to the same thing. I had an idea, thought it through, and didn't like it. Had another idea, thought it through, and didn't like it. Had another idea, thought it through, didn’t like it. It’s Wednesday, so let’s talk about Pirates Cove. I’m told the sale may close today, and Citrus County will be the proud owner of 3 acres of pristine property on the St. Martin’s Aquatic Preserve. The sale price was just under $1.2 million, with $900,000 coming from the county and $300,000 raised from citizens and businesses. Happy Tuesday! It’s the middle of February, and you know what that means? The Primary is just six months away. So, with little else to grab my attention this week, we’re going to talk some about the ins and outs of Citrus County politicking. To wit: Meanwhile, back at the School Board. Three Citrus County School Board seats are up for election this year. Did you know that? I didn’t, and it’s my job to know such things. The last few weeks, I’ve had this nagging feeling that I’m forgetting something significant in this year’s political coverage. Then I saw Thomas Kennedy at an event a few weeks ago and it dawned on me that I hadn’t a clue what’s up with School Board politics these days. |
