For someone who did so poorly with math in school I sure am fascinated by numbers.
Not just numbers, but data. Not just data, but data that tells a story. Such as the data Property Appraiser Cregg Dalton presented Friday to the chamber of commerce about the growth we’re seeing around here. Some days I just wanna play hooky. All I need is an excuse. Thank you Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays played at home Thursday afternoon for the 13th straight win to start the season. Only two teams since 1900 have done that. It may surprise you to learn that one of my favorite things is being proven wrong. Very often I have an idea for a blog and will call the person I’m writing about to let him/her know what I’m up to. I don’t do that to convince the person I’m right. I do that so he/she can convince me I’m not. Then there are monkeys. It’s a good government day if county commissioners are debating whether to give money for monkey housing. That’s where we found ourselves Tuesday as the county commission voted 3-2 to provide $98,000 toward the refurbishment of Monkey Island, which sits on the Homosassa River and is an absolute delight in our community. Here’s a story about small-town politics. Crystal River City Manager Ken Frink announced his resignation Monday night and clearly it was unexpected. In August, Frink will walk away from a $110,000-a-year dream job, managing the city where he grew up. No severance, no buyout. It’s the Monday after Easter so let’s talk about the Suncoast Parkway and local roads. There’s some interesting conversation taking place about the parkway’s impact on the local roads we all recognize — Cardinal Street, County Road 491 and Homosassa Trail, to name a few — and the general feeling the state should be helping with whatever improvements the county or city of Crystal River feel is needed. There is little I recall from this interview but one question. It was a March 2005 day and Bay News 9 wanted to speak with the Chronicle’s senior reporter about the discovery of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford’s body in a shallow grave near her Homosassa home. An interesting phenomenon is taking place with the pendulum swing. The pendulum swing is how I’ve long referenced the shifting political winds in Citrus County. It’s not Democrat vs. Republican, but rather relates to local ways of life. Happy Tuesday! For no reason other than it’s Tuesday, I present two topics from Monday’s information-gathering: — The county happily issued a press release that the state has given permission for it to bid out the 1.9-mile C.R. 491 widening project in Lecanto. Sometimes things just happen. Several people in the last week sent me images similar to the one with today's blog. They depict Sheriff Mike Prendergast's personal Facebook page posting a photo of a ballcap with a message offensive to Democrats. By posting the photo, one could argue Prendergast endorses the message. |
