Well, this is a bummer. Time for a new World Headquarters. We’ve been here for two years. The owners are selling, so I’m scouting possible new locations. Before I get into how much we’re going to miss this place, and the stress of the situation, let me tell you a little bit how we got here. So, I’m enjoying a normal Wednesday, when I get a hold of a bunch of paperwork. It describes in detail accusations of election violations against Sheriff Dave Vincent that the state determined were unfounded. OK, that’s kinda interesting. And then I see my name is on the accuser's witness list. Good Wednesday! OK, so you know how this goes. I spend an entire day watching the County Commission meeting, you get to relish in my observations. Or, something like that. Random thoughts from another day of your government at work: Happy Tuesday! To paraphrase Buddy the Elf: “Did you see today’s County Commission agenda? It’s ginormous!” Let’s jump right in: Happy Monday! Let’s talk. This used to be so easy, talking to county commissioners. The board meets twice a month. Each meeting has an “open to the public” portion. This is the time citizens use a few minutes of their lives to express an opinion to elected leaders. There’s a certain balance to this blog business, and when it’s out of whack, I’m left staring at a blank computer screen for hours at a time. Like Thursday. It’s not that I’m out of topics. That’s not it. Plenty to discuss. Off the top of my head: Pine Ridge golf, Pine Ridge sand mine, Suncoast Parkway next phase, Orange Avenue in Floral City, One for All, Inverness Villages 4, special Senate race. Well, there’s just no easy way to do this. I watched the County Commission’s budget hearing Wednesday online from the World Headquarters. That can only mean one thing: Budget highlights! Look…that’s why you pay me the big bucks. Let’s get to it: It’s Wednesday, and there’s good news. We’ve got a ballgame. Participation for the local option sales tax survey topped 500 when it closed out at midnight Tuesday. That combines those who participated online with folks who showed up at the town hall meetings in person and filled out the questionnaire. Happy Tuesday! Two items on our list today:
— As was reported throughout social media over the weekend, the iconic Shamrock Inn in Floral City has been sold and will close at the end of business day Saturday, Aug. 2. Happy Monday! Let’s talk about taxes. Relax, it won’t be the civics lessons I had planned when Friday came to an end. The original thought, based on the County Commission having budget public hearings Wednesday, was a deep dive at all county taxes that compose the budget. JWC Inner Circle members gave me that idea.
