Full disclosure: I’m not a Target guy. Of course, I’m not a shopping person. So, Target wouldn’t hold any lesser role with me than, say, Winn-Dixie. Nothing against Target. I’ve always enjoyed their popcorn. And it’s a clean, bright, happy store. If I was a shopper, Target would be right up there. We’re going to bounce around a little bit today and see how all this works out. — Speedy recovery to Chamber of Commerce president/CEO Josh Wooten, who was hospitalized Sunday after a heart attack. Josh had his stent procedure Monday morning and is on the mend, thank God. — Savannah’s post Sunday evening about her dad scared the crap out of me. It’s weird getting to our age when the warranties run out. Playing with house money by this point. —I reposted Savannah’s message Sunday night and the community responded. Over 400 reactions and 200 prayer comments. I guess people like the guy. Heard a story the other day that I must share. Laura Gatling-Wright taught for 14 years in Citrus County public schools. She interned at Homosassa Elementary School, and she recalled being nervous and intimidated in the days before school started. She walked to her classroom and workers were setting it up. The school’s principal, Dr. Scott Hebert, welcomed her. Happy Friday! Welcome to Early Voting, Day One. I know what you’re thinking. Really, Mike? Politics on Friday? Can’t we catch one day’s break from this? Yes! Starting Aug. 21. No heavy lifting today, I promise. Just some odds and ends… Sometimes, it just comes down to a hunch. There’s one race I just can’t figure out even days before early voting starts: Superintendent of Schools. This should be a no-brainer. There are two candidates. One is clearly more qualified than the other. I mean, not even close. Based on resume, experience, community involvement, and actual work in the trenches — that’s Scott Hebert, hands down. It’s Wednesday, so let’s talk about momentum. Momentum is huge in politics. With early voting starting Friday and 10,000 people already voting by mail, we are in full-fledged Aug. 20 primary election mode. I use a sports analogy. Teams limping into the playoffs rarely succeed. Campaigns that fizzle or go into cruise control in August find themselves sucking wind when voting starts. A few post-Debby thoughts before explaining how the sheriff pulled me over for speeding but let me go without a ticket. — Driving and walking through Crystal River on Monday reminded me of the geographical diversity of our county. The rain and wind from Hurricane Debby certainly caused a ruckus over at the New Just Wright Citrus World Headquarters on the shores of Big Lake Henderson. However, we don’t have tides. Once the rain ends and we clean up Mother Nature’s mess, it’s somewhat forgotten. |
