A little road extension opened up the other day. You may have heard about it. Just Wright Citrus’ posting Monday evening of the Suncoast Parkway opening between S.R. 44 and C.R. 486 garnered quite a bit of attention — over 214,000 views and 300-plus comments. That’s a significant amount of chatter for something I didn’t think was that far on folks’ radar. The green shirts doomed the black shirts. See, there are several ways for citizens to defeat a developer’s plan. Organization, proper information, widespread involvement, and showing up when needed. The biggest is uniformity. If neighbors are not unified against development, county commissioners have one fewer reason to reject it. Happy Tuesday! It’s a full County Commission slate, but a few items before going there. One, the Suncoast Parkway section between S.R. 44 and C.R. 486 opened late Monday afternoon. Finished 500 days early. Can you believe that? Welcome to the week! OK, here’s how I see it. I’m talking about the County Commission stuff. Two issues: Janet Barek’s conduct with staffers, and this board’s inability to grow up. Cutting to the chase: Happy Friday! Everyone good? I’m writing today’s blog from what I call the porch, which is actually a spacious screen room where I have a vast view of Big Lake Henderson. I’ll be losing this view in a few weeks. Not ready to talk about it yet, but the new Just Wright Citrus World Headquarters III is not waterfront, making me a true landlubber for the first time in 20 years. Highlighted on the calendar Wednesday was our congressman’s town hall. U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis met with residents at the Sugarmill Woods Country Club. About 50 people showed up, a decent number I guess. I attended for a few reasons. Not sure if this is blog-worthy, but it’s on my mind. It has to do with the center turn lane on southbound U.S. 41 turning east at State Road 44 in Inverness. The Burger King corner. I know this center lane rather well. Just about any Inverness resident is familiar with it. One of my favorite lines from the TV show “M*A*S*H” comes in a scene where Col. Potter is dealing with another of Hawkeye’s madcap adventures. Relaying that he’s a year from retirement and looking forward to backyard barbecuing, Col. Potter says to Hawkeye: “Why are you wetting on my charcoal?” Happy Monday! Recent events have brought to mind an incident from decades ago. The Crystal River City Council was considering improvements to the parks. The city manager made several recommendations, including the installation of drinking fountains that also catered to citizens in wheelchairs. One councilman said that was a waste of money. His thinking: Folks in wheelchairs should carry sippy cups so they can reach up and get water from the fountain like the rest of us with working legs. Read an interesting article the other day about chiropractors. See, I had googled, “Were chiropractors accepted as doctors?” Several posts popped up, including a chiropractor that boasts it is a six-time winner of the Houston Chronicle’s Best of the Best. This website includes a history of the chiropractic profession, which started in 2700 B.C., and has been updated a few times since then. |
