Happy October! Let’s discuss the politics of hurricanes. Not like the Facebook post I saw from a guy who believes that Hurricane Helene’s path was set in motion by Democrats to wipe out Trump voters. No, I’m referring to how local politicians react to stormy weather. Here we are again. Instead of enjoying a warm Sunday afternoon folks in Crystal River, Homosassa, and Ozello were up to their necks in sogginess. Their belongings dragged to the curb, thanks to Hurricane Helene. A few thoughts: Good morning! First things first, make sure to please follow the Helene information today. A lot of uncertainty and anxiety out there, especially in Crystal River, so let’s be smart and safe. Now. I rarely have to pause before writing the blog. I tend not to get too emotionally attached to any issue to avoid saying things I shouldn’t say. My gas tank is on empty. That’s OK, isn’t it? I’m driving along S.R. 44 on Monday in Crystal River and notice orange cones in the road. “Why’s the sandbag site open?” I asked no one. Later at home, I glanced at the weather and saw that we may have some, you know, weather. But geez, it’s hundreds of miles away. Must we start thinking about it now? Happy Monday! Let’s talk a bit today about Janet Barek. We had a pleasant Cattle Dog chat a week or so after Janet’s stunning Primary win over Ruthie Davis Schlabach. Not only was she elected commissioner, but Republicans in the same primary elected her State Committeewoman, the liaison between the county party and state. It’s kind of a big deal among the party faithful. Happy Friday! Here’s an idea: Just Wright Citrus Heroes Hall of Fame. The thought came to me Wednesday night while writing about the Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery restoration project, headed by Andrea McCray. He’s not the last guy I’d expect to show up in a cemetery to pitch in, but close. Yet, there was Sen. Blaise Ingoglia with Andrea McCray, rattling off a list of things the state may be able to assist in the Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery project. Andrea, beaming like she just discovered sunlight, soaked it in. Here’s one for us oldsters: Remember the Life cereal commercials with Mikey? Two brothers are staring at their breakfast bowl. “What’s this stuff?” one asks. They don’t want to taste it, so they pawn it off on the littlest brother. Had a fascinating conversation Monday with a friend who is convinced Holly Davis’ re-election is in trouble. This friend isn’t overtly political, but he pays attention and has a better-than-average grasp on how things work around here. He went through the litany of reasons he saw as incumbent Ruthie Davis Schlabach’s downfall against Janet Barek in the District 3 primary shocker. Basically, my friend said, Ruthie sees life one way, and Citrus County voters see it differently. |
