![]() It’s only Wednesday, and already I’m out of words. That’s what happens during July 4 week. By July 2, I’m thinking of the July 3 Patriotic Evening at Liberty and Wallace Brooks Parks in Inverness. July 4th week to me is like Christmas to an 8-year-old. I can’t sit still. So, it’s a special Happy Birthday America photo page. Not that these photos have any particular theme. In fact, the theme is I’m too lazy to write a full blog today. Look. It’s July 4th week. We can have some time for ourselves, have safe fun with friends and neighbors, and celebrate our community. That’s my nice way of saying I’m taking a four-day holiday break. We’ll be back on Monday with a blog on the Chronicle’s candidate forum, which is 6 p.m. Monday at the Fairgrounds Auditorium. Here we go: It’s pointless to try and describe the intensity of community support for Deputy Andy Lahera. Anyone who volunteered or participated in Saturday’s BBQ fundraiser at Lecanto High School left with a belly full of community pride. What happened to Andy is horrible. His recovery is slow and meticulous. Andy’s wife, Michelle, is a beacon of strength. When I told her that a few minutes before taking this photo, she said her only concern is Andy. “If the situation were reversed, he’d be right there with me,” she said with tears in her eyes. Many people driving up for their BBQ wanted Michelle to know they’re praying for Andy. That means a lot. And, wow, what a success: Over $100,000 raised for the Lahera family, who are trying to make it without the head of the household at home. I have to believe his care is quite expensive. A great, great day. Typical for this county. (And how about Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters raising $16,500 for the Laheras with a special Andy Lahera blend? Local business, local cause.) This is what a thriving community looks like. So, what’s a lazy day without spending at least some of it at MacRae's on the Homosassa River? Like many Citrus Countians, I’ve spent quite a few peaceful moments sitting on the benches outside MacRae’s bait shop, watching the river activity. With its location directly across from Crump’s Landing, and at the county boat ramp, there is plenty of activity. You may wonder…how it can be peaceful sitting along on the waterway equivalent of U.S. 19. Here’s my answer: Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Some things should simply be experienced. Old Homosassa will always hold a special place with me. It starts at MacRae’s. Now, here’s our quiz of the day. This shouldn’t be that difficult. Where am I standing?
I’m really enjoying these Where’s Waldo selfie quizzes. Gets me out in all corners of the county and keeps readers sharp. It’s fun, but there’s a message as well. We have so much to explore here. Drives me crazy to see debates about, say, buying Pirates Cove in Ozello, and arguments against it coming from people who have never visited Ozello. For crying out loud, this county is rich in things to see and experience. That's even more vital with all the residential and commercial growth. Those special locales are an oasis. As for the photo, a free new Just Wright Citrus T-shirt (I haven’t even seen one yet) if you know the significance of the water body behind me. It's July 3. Let the celebrations begin.
