It was about halfway into the blistering that county commissioners were giving our esteemed sheriff when I wrote this note to myself: (Oh my, my, my.) Exactly like that. By then, it was clear that Sheriff Mike Prendergast had made a horrible tactical error in trying to sandbag commissioners on the COPS grant. Here’s a flashback no one enjoys: forgetting homework. It’s Sunday, beautiful weather, tossing the old pigskin in the yard and your friend who, up until that point, seemed a decent, kind human being, calls out, “Didja get that math homework done?” And, boink, football goes off your forehead with the realization you’ve not only forgotten the homework, you left the textbook for the homework back in school. One of my favorite Just Wright Citrus readers is P.J. Auffhammer, because she just tells it straight. In Friday’s blog I mentioned, almost off-handedly, that the planning commission meeting Thursday included a mega development in Beverly Hills that will have a lagoon park. This was never the plan. Even at the start, it never dawned on me that it would take such a turn. The blog. I’m talking about the blog. My idea was to write a computer column every day. That morphed into what it is today: A conversation starter. Whether the conversation is with 10 people or 99, folks are jumping on Just Wright Citrus every day, chatting in a nice way on issues that bring out the worst of people in other places. Consider, if you will, the parking space. Pretty standard fare. Two diagonal white lines separated 9 or 10 feet apart, creating a rectangular box for a vehicle to sit its keister. I wonder who invented the parking space. How did that come about? A Model T rolled off the line, and someone said, “Park it over there, between those two white stripes.” Mindi Hastings wins the right-place, right-time award. Mindi is a Crystal River resident who wants to improve her community. She’s volunteered for city boards and is generally the kind of resident any community would want. We interrupt a week of enticing political gab to talk about real life for a moment. I have a new friend. His name is Buddy. And, of course, a story to go with him. Monday morning, I always look forward to meeting with a certain batch of friends in Spring Hill. I was headed south on U.S. 41 in dense fog around 7:15 when, between Floral City and the Hernando County line, I saw this poor mutt in the road looking as lost as lost can be. Happy Monday! Let’s start the week with some School Board politics. Two seats are up: Districts 2 and 4. Sandy Counts is the District 4 incumbent and running for re-election. It’s early yet, but she’s so far unopposed. |
