We had another good week: marked 5,900 Facebook followers, with one post exceeding 130 comments. That’s a lot of chatter taking place right here. Most of it is the spirited back-and-forth readers have enjoyed at Just Wright Citrus for some time. Others, though, are starting to take on a glint that should probably be addressed.
Let’s first be clear what we do: Opinion that leads to conversation and debate. Several folks complained that my Sheriff Prendergast blog was too one-sided. They want me to “report the news,” play it straight, that sort of thing. Just Wright Citrus is not a news site like the Chronicle. Readers go to the Chronicle for local news. I occasionally report local news here as well, usually as part of an overall position. I thought that was obvious, but a few people mentioned it this week, so best to clear it up. The truth is, we’re still learning a little more than two years into it. Each day is brand new. With that, a few other points: — I occasionally receive complaints from readers because I deleted their comments. They think it’s unfair. Here’s the deal: These conversations can go sideways in no time. Someone needs to referee, or it stops being a conversion and starts becoming a free-for-all. That is the opposite of our goal here. I can tell when there’s an easy flow to the debate, and when someone is throwing in a monkey wrench just to stir trouble. I’m becoming even more aware of tricksters who jump into certain discussions to draw attention away from the blog’s point. Each comment stands on its own. If my initial reaction is to wince it’s probably gone. This really doesn’t happen that much. If I’m deleting your comment, there’s a good reason for it. Along those lines, I’ve been extremely tolerant in allowing comments critical of me personally. That’s going to change somewhat. Debate the viewpoint all you want, but questioning my motives is off the table. Unless through your generosity you’re helping to financially support the blog, it’s totally free. If you don’t like the blog topic, don’t read it. I mean…I don’t know how else to say this. I’m the sole writer. I write what I write. I’m not offended if it’s not your fancy. (I am so appreciative of folks who disagree wholeheartedly with just about everything I write yet, they still read faithfully and participate without crossing any lines. It makes my day when someone calls me out without making it personal.) — The late Tim Dorsey is my favorite fictional author. I’ve read all his books numerous times over. I interviewed him once for a story and asked about writing style. Dorsey said his most important reader was the guy with his hands on the keyboard. Meaning, his writing style didn't conform to anyone but himself. That was excellent advice that I hold true at Just Wright Citrus. The style, flow, and frequent assassination of the English language — all mine. I rarely read other local blogs. I don’t try to be anyone but me. — Doesn't mean I’m not influenced. I walk that plank alone each day, but always with your opinions in my head. Who influences me? Just about everyone. I may disagree with some, but I’m listening. This blog’s opinion, though, is mine alone. — I am frequently wrong. So are you. Welcome to life. — Again, just another big thanks. We are rolling right along gathering participants and expanding the conversation during a critical Citrus County election season. Candidates are paying attention. Some say I risk alienating readers by being so blunt. Well, in my view, we need to be. Two months until ballot qualifying for county races; the Aug. 20 primary will be here before we know it. With major races including Sheriff, County Commission, School Board, and Superintendent, that’s a lot to break down in a short time. Frankly, it’s pretty exciting stuff. Glad you’re along for the ride. Have a spectacular weekend, friends. Join the discussion on our Facebook page. Enjoying the blog? Please consider supporting it at Venmo, PayPal, or Patreon.
